Establishing a Mac ham shack – Ham with Apple sauce

I am in Australia and got my Foundation License late last year. I have been finding my way and have focused on HF, satellite repeaters on 2/.7, and, more recently, FT8/WSTJ-X. I only have Icom radios (HF/6, 2/.7, receivers, and UHF CB). My Mac is a M2 16/256 MacBook Air and an iPad Pro M4. I have had a few challenges and frustrations around sticking to Mac, logging, and QSL software and platforms.

Sticking to a Mac

  • Icom doesn’t support Macs, but I overcame this through Parallels. On the Windows side, only Icom-specific software runs (memory management, syncing, and firmware updates).
  • The biggest issue was getting drivers for the various cables on the Windows side. Mac was no problem, but Windows was a nightmare. Some drivers wouldn’t install to run cables with chips on COM ports. This was overcome by opening the various drivers files in Windows, right-clicking* .inf files in File Explorer, and choosing “install from this location.” It works! I am talking about PL2303,
  • My Mac software suite is fantastic. My current issue is that only one serial port comes from IC-7300, and I want to use it on SDR Control for Icom, MacLoggerDX, and WSTJ-X. At present, I do a lot of closing and opening. Do you have any suggestions?

Logging and QSL software and platforms

  • I have decided to use QRZ as my log book and purchased the XML feed with an API to connect into apps. Well, here my nightmare begins. I can’t find an app that syncs up and down with QRZ XML. From what I can gather, most apps will upload to QRZ but not pull down? Why is this the case? What am I missing? Help!
  • I purchased MacLoggerDX and its iPad app (HD) but can only use the former with rig control if I am not using SDR Control for Icom.
  • I only want a database like QRZ XML and apps on my Macs, iPhone, and iPad that I can sync both ways.
  • It would be great if these could link into a QSL service, an issue I find equally challenging. QRZ and eQSL look like they’re from 1995, even though their functionality has been improved. Again, help!
  • I’ve looked at World Radio League but it gives me the creeps.
  • This afternoon, I am going to thoroughly read the manuals for SDR Control for Icom and MacLoggerDX to see if I am missing something. WSTJ-X and GridTracker work great with QRZ XML.
  • Hamrs has potential but only has one way sync (up).
  • I also have access to a trial of Station Master out of the UK. I am yet to fire it up. Does anyone have experience with this?

Anyway, that’s three months of me having Ham with Apple sauce. Your feedback is welcome.
