Customising your car stereo and phone controls on the steering wheel

To: Mac Geek Gab

In the show released around 14 April 2025, Dave spoke about his issues with knowing about and/or customising his steering wheel controls to his in-car AV system and carplay (a Subaru Outback, as I recall).

This is from someone not too far from the ‘real’ outback (as in Australian Outback).

I recently updated the stereo in my Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to wireless CarPlay with a Sony XAV-AX4000.

When I got in the car after the installation, NOTHING WORKED on the steering wheel. I madly started hitting settings and found exactly what I needed. You could customise every control on the steering wheel – for example, stop, play, shuffle, volume, toggle calls, and activate the S-lady. All of that was fairly straightforward.

I thought about what to do with the middle button on the steering wheel, marked “MODE”.

I could:

  • Switch between modes – CarPlay, AM/FM, Bluetooth, USB, etc
  • I could mute the audio
  • I could pause anything playing

I ended up choosing “Pause” so if I had to, I could stop the noise, pause the program and not lose or miss anything said.

It’s worthwhile having a poke around.
