I recently had a personal existential crisis. I planned a visit to one of the more popular fast-food outlets, so I whipped out my app on approach to place the order for the drive-through.
On this app, I use “Sign in with Apple,” but it just didn’t want to sign in. It would bounce back to the sign-in screen and, after a few attempts, tell me, “There’s a problem with Sign in with Apple” (gee, thanks). I tried all sorts of things…. signing out, signing in, deleting, reinstalling, and rebooting the phone, including a hard reset. No good.
I even tried resetting the password for the app by using the email address and it didn’t recognise it. I then thought, ah-hah, it’s using one of those private-relay masked emails. I thought I had cracked it and tried that to sign in and reset the password. It then popped up, insultingly, telling me to use “Sign in with Apple”. My fist was beyond shaking and the distance between me and a fix grew wider by the minute..
In this moment of crisis, I went with old-fashioned ordering and tap-and-go (Apple Pay/PayWave). I sat in the carpark furious at the app, the chain, Apple and anyone else in sight.
Then, something triggered in my head… I’ve seen a “Sign in with Apple” choice in iPhone settings:
- iPhone
- Settings
- My name and photo (the first choice) “Apple Account”
- Scroll down
- Select “Sign in with Apple”
- I found the offending log-in and clicked the arrow on the right to open it
- Delete!
I then went back to the app, hit sign in with Apple and boom, straight through, the app opened up and all of my account details, reward points and history (handy for reordering) was there. Something had clearly gone wrong with whatever powers this damn system.
This was absolute ‘minute to midnight’ stuff. I celebrated by ordering, going up the driveway, and collecting a well-deserved soft-serve.
